Everything you need to know about Lyon airport transfers to the Alps
Lyon Saint-Exupéry is the second most important gateway to the French Alps, serving over 11 million passengers annually. What makes it distinctive among Alpine gateway airports is its integrated TGV station — the Gare de Lyon Saint-Exupéry — built directly within the airport complex. This dual hub means clients can arrive by air from international origins or by high-speed train from Paris (2 hours), Marseille (1 hour 40), Lille (3 hours) or Brussels, and begin their mountain transfer from the same location. The airport is located 25 kilometres east of Lyon city centre, at the junction of the A43 autoroute heading towards Chambéry and the Alps. This position gives it a natural advantage for transfers to the Northern Alps — the A43 runs almost directly east to Chambéry (90 minutes), then the route branches into the Tarentaise valley for the major ski resorts. Journey times from Lyon Saint-Exupéry to the principal resorts are consistently competitive. Chambéry is reached in approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes. Albertville, the gateway to the Tarentaise, is 1 hour and 45 minutes. From Albertville, Méribel is a further 35 minutes, Courchevel 45 minutes, and Val Thorens approximately 50 minutes. Val d'Isère and Tignes are reached via Bourg-Saint-Maurice, adding another 30 minutes beyond Albertville. In total, Lyon to Courchevel takes approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes — comparable to Geneva, and often faster during peak periods when the Geneva-Chambéry corridor is heavily loaded. The TGV connection is a significant advantage for Paris-based clients. The TGV Inoui from Paris Gare de Lyon arrives at the Saint-Exupéry station in 2 hours. From there, the road transfer to the resort begins immediately — no city transit, no station change, no taxi queue. For a family arriving from Paris on the Friday evening TGV, the transfer to Méribel can be completed by midnight, with the first morning on the slopes the next day. Winter conditions between Lyon and the Alps follow predictable patterns. The A43 to Chambéry is generally well-maintained and rarely closed by snow. The challenges begin beyond Albertville, where the roads climb into the Tarentaise valley and altitude-dependent weather becomes a factor. Snow chains are mandatory equipment during winter months, and our vehicles carry them as standard. Our chauffeurs monitor real-time road conditions via Bison Futé and ATMB traffic systems, adjusting routes when conditions require it. During Saturday changeover days in winter — the peak transfer period — the Tarentaise access road (N90/D915) between Albertville and Moûtiers can experience significant congestion, particularly between 8:00 and 12:00 and again between 14:00 and 18:00. An experienced chauffeur who knows the timing patterns can plan departure to avoid the worst of the traffic. Crew Transport & Security operates daily transfers from Lyon Saint-Exupéry airport and TGV station to all major French Alpine resorts. Our fleet includes the V-Class as the preferred choice for families with ski equipment, the E-Class for efficient duo transfers, and the S-Class for prestige. The service operates 24/7 throughout the year, with enhanced capacity during the winter ski season.
